Why was the Empire State Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry formed?

The Empire State Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (ESCAD) was formed to encourage dentists interested in focusing on cosmetic dentistry to receive advanced training and mentoring from leaders in the area of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry combines the art of smile design with the science of creating beautiful smiles! A dentist emphasizing cosmetic dentistry "sees" the finished smile before beginning the transformation. The artist inside the cosmetic dentist (talent) must be supported by a commitment to advanced continuing education in cosmetic dentistry (training), the ability to perform various cosmetic procedures (experience), and the desire to share knowledge with other practitioners (mentoring) in order to achieve and maintain the highest level of cosmetic dentistry expertise.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

People often use cosmetic dentistry to describe elective procedures utilized to change an average smile into a dazzling smile. Many professionals consider it to be the most gratifying as well as the most demanding and technique sensitive area of dentistry. Dentists often incorporate cosmetic dentistry into traditional procedures required to eliminate dental disease and improve oral health. By using state-of-the art materials and techniques, most situations allow the chosen treatment to incorporate tooth-colored cosmetic restorations that mimic natural teeth in function and beauty. Contemporary dental technology enables dentists emphasizing cosmetic dentistry to fabricate dental restorations that have the functionality, comfort, and longevity of traditional dentistry, while restoring and enhancing the beauty of a smile.

Aren't all dentists considered "cosmetic dentists?"

Cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty recognized by the American Dental Association, so any general dentist can claim to be a cosmetic dentist. Dentists who emphasize cosmetic dentistry generally have an artistic eye, may invest in better, more costly materials, and may employ more talented technicians. These professionals will likely attend more continuing education courses to advance their skills in cosmetic dentistry, and they look forward to working with patients who demand a higher level of expertise in the subjective arena of cosmetics.
